Here are some of my favorite add-ons for Firefox 3.x, which I am referencing here so I can remember them the next time I install a new user a computer or a whole new operating system.
Scrapbook - Webpage copier for offline viewing (Great for preserving documents to read later)
DownThemall - Download filter and que for all/one tab(s)
Flashblock - Turn off the automatic loading of Flash animations. A play icon appears instead and you have control over activating which animations to play and when. It interfers only when the entire website is Flash-based, which is a stupid approach to web design anyway and the site probably does not deserve to be viewed.
Adblock Plus
Wired Marker - colored marking of web pages, stored in a scrapbook file. You can port this file to another computer for them to share your markups. I have not explored whether you can port individual markups or even certain pages of markups yet.
PermaTabs - Make certain tabs permanent, so when you start Firefox these appear every time. Also, when you use close other tabs permatabs are not closed.
Video Download Helper
Fast Video Download
Firefox Universal Uploader
Media Wrap - transparently wrap ActiveX (test site http://members.aol.com/jrzycrim01/mozilla/wmp/wmpaxtest.html) and it identifies locales such as PL (Poland)
Splash - sound, opacity, CSS customization, custom images, and much more. You can add {appVersion}, {buildID} and {userAgent} to the loading text.
Abduction - Screenshot of a web page or part of a page
Image Tweak - image viewing and resizing
Fox Saver - Firefox turns into a screensaver/photo viewer from any source
YouPlayer - play or download from Google Video, MetaCafe, MySpace and YouTube
Duplicate Tab - clone a tab along with its history
TabX - makes the close 'x' stay always visible
ColorfulTabs
Morning Coffee - load up set sites each morning in your tabs
Tab Renamizer - rename embarrassing tabs
Undo Closed Tabs Button
Remove Tabs - to the left/right of highlighted one
TabAway - double-click to close tab
Multiple Tab Handler - features to handle multiple tabs, especially closing
gui:config - This is an extension for advanced preferences. gui:config makes it easier to change preferences that can only be found in the “about:config”
Tab Sidebar - display previews of your tabs in the sidebar
As you can see, in my opinion Firefox still has a long way to go with prefecting the Tab management features and making it easier for programmers to update their Add-ons to stay compatible with the newest browser. I have lost a few add-ons along the way with the upgrades to Firefox, none of which were integrated into the browser. However, with the upgrade to 3.0x I have lost MANY, though maybe two have been integrated. This is the sad reality of the Mozilla Foundation. I still would never trade it for the slow-changing MSIE or the confusing and difficult interface of Opera. Firefox ROCKS the WEB!

Know Your Ancestors!
It's been too long since I posted something here. I just ran across an excellent quote while searching for a piece of software to put up genealogy info about my family on the web (accessible only to my family memebers as a collaborative effort). This quote tells two of the sober reasons for knowing your ancestors:
So the person who said the above was absolutely correct! We might have a stronger sense of planning for the future to create a new extension of the past that is as great as the one we hear of that supports us. We would have greater respect for our predecessors, knowing that they belong not only to us, but to a timeline of others who stretch back into the fog of memory and that these people built a past out of which we arose and in which we still live.
- Oh, you have reminded me about my dream. I'd like to create my family's tree for my descendants. Everybody must know his history. I realize if all people had information about their ancestors, young people would be kinder and they would try to do something useful in their lives. ( from the reader's comments at http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/09/create-family-tree-charts-inside.html)

World Peace and Perversion of Truth
Considering world peace has brought me to a different place in my journey so far. I do not believe there can be any stable agreement on world peace. It would have to come about through personal and national devastations, either natural or man-made. The other possibility is through brainwashing and indoctrination under the assumption that the content justifies the methods. Yet the results are a perversion of truth, nevertheless.
Scientific education has long taken the leadership role in the training of our children's minds. However, while the content has been fairly reliable, the methods have created generations of brainwashed adults. They are happy to advocate scientific theory, whenever they might understand it enough to re-iterate it, and they certainly are proud enough to turn it against spiritual beliefs that are connected in any way to the Judeo-Christian faith. The use of something so good against something else so good, perverts these children's perception of truth. If good is calling good evil, then it makes the nature of good and evil unclear in these developing minds. Then when they become adults and assume that they have a grasp on good and evil, this perceived conflict causes them to turn toward a denial of truth, calling it truth.

Disjointing the World Protects Us Against Global Manipulation
Here is some attempt to begin wrestling with this issue. However, their conclusion of Let go! is dissatisfying. No one either wants to or is able to actually let go. This quasi-Buddhist mantra is a lame duck excuse to quit worrying so much about something that is so important it ruffles your feathers all night long, yet so vague or ambiguous that your brain aches each time you consider the problem. In a later post, though, he gets it right, especially about the direction of commerce and the online community.
This guy grapples with a specific aspect of the issue much better. He is worth reading.
Here is another aspect of this particular topic about only one company invading the community of citizens. Yet, he looks at it as if he were himself a fledgling company, so-to-speak. His perspective is quite commercial, while missing the whole point. If someone is siphoning your thoughts off your blog, allowing others to converse about it at their place, but not letting you know about it, then you are being pimped and bannished from the conversation that you are generating. THAT's the rub!
Open Source, the Net and media piracy all have strong implications in this mess! Don't get me wrong though; I don't blame any of them. They are all consequences of transcendence beyond borders, as also are the new Germany, the European Union and the U.S. war in Afghanistan-Iraq-soon.to.be.Iran!
In short, the corporations deserve what they are getting. I DO blame them for many of the modern illnesses, starting with pollution, child labor, sweat shops in S.E. Asia, insatiable hunger for war-mongering, manipulation of the sinful nature in us through commerce and advertisements, unrighteous use of the law against people (through lobbying, raising the status of the corporation to higher legal entity than the citizen, curbing citizen's abilities to sue the companies while also limiting the citizen's use of bankruptcy as a defensive tool against their excessive fees and cruel attitudes in collecting debts). I have watched corporations ruin families' and individuals' lives and have been there to try to help these same people pick up the pieces.
I am opposed to Microsoft's bold attempts to monopolize their industry and expand into others with the same attitude. I am opposed to the passive attitude of the individual toward this sort of totalitarian attitude. I am opposed to the careless steward who abuses the people with whatever power they can grasp. I am opposed to the individual who has only their attitude to assault others with and they do not refrain from creating chaos or at least anxiety just to see that they can. The poison runs down hill, like Reagan's Trickle Down Economics.

Iran - Bush wakes up to it!
In case you missed it in the news, we have proof that U.S. President Bush is slow on the uptake. In this article by the Washington Post, from the 12 April 2008, we read that the Bush Administration has decided that Iran, not Al Queda, is the top threat to U.S. attempts to stabilize Iraqi democracy.
When we attacked Iraq, just before we entered Afghanistan, I told my friends that we would have to fight Iran too. After all, we helped install Sadaam into power in Iraq, we drove him back out of Kuwait (Desert Shield and Desert Storm, under the first Bush) and we were finally going in to remove him from his totalitarian power trip. The whole mess was the result of the U.S. trying to covertly build a buffer between Iran and the rest of the anti-Israeli Arab nations. Certainly, we would replace Sadaam with a far more democratic system that would be deeply influenced by Washington and provide an even stronger buffer against Iran. So Iran now has theological reasons as well as ethnic and political reasons to oppose the U.S. presence in Iraq. From what angle could the Bush Administration NOT see this one coming?

The World is Becoming Disjointed
I have watched for some time now as the world has become more disjointed with the rise of the Net. Some people have practically abandonned the Net, while others have abandonned their families and friends, replacing them with remote ones. What is happening?
I read indexes of blogs and wonder, "Who cares?" So what if this person thinks something about nothing! Who is going to waste their time to read that blog? Certainly funny blogs can attrack many people. Serious blogs may attract people too, but only kooks who have an axe to grind. So all the kooks attack each other with their rubber axes, screaming crusading snarls, flailing their coffee cups at their monitors when their axes are shown for what they really are.
Where can we go from here? Where are the real friends? What can the use of this fathomless pit of blogging be? Someone throw me a rope!

Spoofing your citizenship to servers!
Here's a good trick if you get a message saying you cannot access some resource on the Net because all slots for your country are full or you just get some message saying you are denied access. This only works if the limitations are due to you not being inside the country of the server.
Find out what country the company who is offering the resource is in. Usually at the bottom or top of the page is an About Us button or link. Once you find that out it is rather straight forward. Google free 'country name' proxies (i.e. free russian proxies). You should be able to find a few pages with lists of free public proxies. You'll have to try them one at a time or randomly to get one that works, though most of them might work right off the bat.
Open the settings for the connection of your browser. Don't even ask about how to do this in MS Internet Explorer, though it is easy to do! Stay away from that piece of trash! It is the world's biggest security risk and whore in the world! It spreads VD (viruses) to your computer and allows anyone to have sex with your computer (namely, hackers, who'll have sex with ANY computer that lets them). I think you get the picture.
-->In the section of the connections settings you can mark that your computer is going through a proxy. That is where you also put in the address and port of the proxy in the country you wish to be seen as a bonafide citizen of. The address might look something like this: 134.89.2.22:80 or 219.93.178.162:3128 . There will be four sets of numbers from one to three digits long, separated by periods. On the end of this string of numbers will be the port number of any length, though usually only up to four digits long, set off by a colon.
Then you access your resource again and viola! The server thinks you are Russian or Danish or whatever nationality belongs to the country of the proxy you put in.

My Favorite Tools - I
Is a great site to get new calendars or to share your own. Try it! You can get calendars of holidays for each country in the world or football schedules and much more. The calendar does not erase your current entries in the calendar on your computer, but merges with it.
This is a great, free Groupware program. A groupware program sits on a server somewhere allowing its members to collaborate on projects. It can be used to integrate any kind of community or group, not just for projects and work! The Catholic Encyclopedia
Here is a good place to go if you need to know something about the Catholic faith, whether or not you yourself are catholic. At the top right is a tiny menu to access the Suma Theolgica by Thomas Aquinas, The church fathers' writings, the Catholic Bible and a library of church documents.Enjoy these tools!

Top 100 Tools for Learning Spring 2008
I agree with many of these. The top one is rather useless from my perspective. I have always faired better with refined and targeted Google searches than any so-called delicious bookmark list.
As for the Goolgle Reader, I have not tried it, but a news feeder is rather straight forward. Maybe it is on the list because no one has tried any other news feeders and they simply love the idea of being fed.
Firefox as a tool is a bit of a stretch. Actually, Firefox plugins should be listed there instead, since these are the real power of this browser. With plugins you can customize the tools available from within your browser until your browser almost becomes another operating system within your operating system (whether Linux, Windows or Mac).
Well, well! Powerpoint? Again, like with the feeder, perhaps the people meant the category of programs rather than the program in particular. Afterall, if people barely know how to turn on their computers they will probably only use what was pre-installed with their system, which if their os is Windows then they likely have MSOffice if any office software. They should try Open Office's presentation element. You can even export to PDF without additional software.
I am proud to see Audacity on the list of the top 10! I reccomend this program to all of my students for a recording project I assign them. It is a great little program that runs on both Linux and Windows.
I think someone from Google has been poisoning this list. Google Docs is terrible. I want to view the whole book! Most of the best books are only partials. The books that are whole are already freely available in the best repositories and can be downloaded directly to your computer so you can read them anytime you like.
Ah! Moodle, originally for Linux, is truly an excellent resource for building an educational site for your students and staff. I have yet seen one as complete or as easy to install and set up.
While YouTube is fun and useful for quick and dirty videos of certain themes you may be teaching on, it is a waste of time for serious work. But I still use it for fun.
This list is worth exploring, so I would reccomend setting aside a Saturday and trying these out. Don't forget to keep a list of what you like. Otherwise, you may really forget to use them even if they are installed on your system.

A Gift of Life Turns Deadly
This (A Gift of Life Turns Deadly) is quite a shocking story! Can you imagine how you would feel as the donor's parents, the donor recipients or the doctors? Unbelievable! Don't you think this would have been discovered in a routine scanning of the organs prior to the transplants? Of course, this all happened due to a misdiagnosis of the 15-year old boy's condition. Doctors are human and make mistakes as we all do, but when they make a mistake it can easily take the life of a bright and promising child.
From a site dedicated to the young man:
Alex Koehne, a ninth grader at Pierson High School in Sag Harbor NY suddenly passed on March 30, 2007 after a brief battle with Non Hodgkin’s Large T Cell Lymphoma. Alex, a much-loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend to many is greatly missed.
A vibrant and outgoing young man, Alex had a wide range of interests as demonstrated by his participation in acting on stage in school plays, as a member of the East Hampton football team and, as we fondly recall, a true passion for watersports.

Whole Cell Hyperlink
Here is a handy trick with spreadsheets. First off, you should get Open Office if you don't yet have it. It's free and comes in so many languages! Anything you make in Open Office can be saved in Microsoft format, for use by your inadequate friends who insist on using the self-centered MS Office (meaning that it does not care about other formats except archaic ones).
Next, imagine you have a cell that you want to hyperlink to a location in a document. You could put some text in the cell, highlight the text and insert hyperlink. However, that would require the user to click on the words themselves. You want the user to be able to click anywhere within the cell itself to jump to the link in the document. You should set up two things for this to work: a bookmark in your document and a rectangle drawing overlaying your cell.
To make a bookmark in your document, place your cursor where you would like the bookmark. Then choose Insert-->Bookmark. In the dialog box type in what you would like to name your bookmark and click Ok.
Back in your spreadsheet you may have to make the Drawing toolbar visible. Go to View-->Toolbars-->Drawing. A toolbar should appear at the bottom of the program. Click on the rectangle and draw a rectangle from one corner to the opposite of your cell. It will likely be filled with a color. That's alright, since we'll just make it transparent anyway.
Now you need to make the rectangle almost completely transparent. Right-click the rectangle and choose Area. Then click on the Transparency tab. 95% should be perfect, since it will allow you to still see that the cell is different from the rest.
Lastly, you must make the hyperlink. In your spreadsheet program you must have the rectangle selected (you'll see about 8 tiny green squares around it). If it is not selected then right-click on it, ignoring the menu that pops up. Next, choose Insert-->Hyperlink. In the dialog box choose Document (on the left), set the Path to the document, click on the Target icon (looks like a target for darts) and select from the Bookmarks section your bookmark and click Apply and Close.
That's it! Now test it.

Repeater did not work out of the box.
Niestety, the repeater Meshbox, did not work straight out of the box. I burned the cd, booted a laptop with it in the Teachers' Room, but it could not find the gateway. By default the software is set to search for it at 192.168.1.1, but I believe there might not be drivers for the wifi card included. I will look into it later when I have more time.

Need Wifi Repeater

My current project is related to my working environment at a teacher's prep college. There is a TP wireless box providing Internet to wireless users at the college. However, as is often the complaint about wireless, the range is aweful. The transmitter is mounted in the corridor of the bottom floor just outside room #9. I've picked up the signal without much problem in #10. I've tried to pick it up on the second floor and am able to in the Secretary's Office quite well. I can also pick up an intermittent and weaker signal in the Teachers' Room. However, in #4 I usually have such a weak signal that there is no connection or the connection is lost as soon as it is made. I also want to provide connectivity all the way to #2.
So my search began for how to use a laptop as a repeater for the signal, via either Windows or Linux. I found the MeshBox project, which provides a free, bootable CD that does exactly what I was looking to do. I'll have a test run next week and report on how it went.

More Memory for the Nokia 6300
As soon as I began putting images, video and music on my phone, the included 128M card was too small. So I purchased a Kingston 2G card with USB micro reader for 60 zł. Now I have plenty of space.
With space comes necessity for organization. So I've created an efficient directory structure of folders as well. One folder I found essential at the start was a TESTING folder within my PROGRAMS folder, as well as a FAILED folder. You might think I should delete the failed programs, but I found that sometimes they simply need a little attention to detail to kickstart.
I'm relatively happy now. :-)

Nokia 6300 and Linux
THE EASY PART
Hooking upWell, I got my Nokia hooked up to my laptop. The cable was a standard camera cable that cost about 30zł. I plugged it into my HP Pavilion zv6000 running SuSE Linux 10.3. The Nokia told me I had a USB cable connected and asked me to "Select mode". I pressed OK. Then I was faced with a menu: 1. Nokia mode 2. Printing & media 3. Data storage. Cool! I chose Data storage, hoping it would give me access to my folders and files of my Nokia on my HP. POP! "127M removeable media" window appeared. I clicked Open in New Window. There they were! All of the contents of the 128M card of the Nokia. Don't ask why it reported it as 127M. :-P The point is that it works and easily!
Contacts and SMS
Next, I had to test access to my Contancts and SMS'. So I had to explore the phone software that comes with Linux. I hit upon one that autodetects the phone and it found my Nokia 6300 properly! Voila! There it was, connected. The program was Wammu.
Photos and Text
I transfered photos I had taken around the world onto my phone, set one as the wallpaper and set the folder as a Screensaver in Slideset mode. WOW! The photos look as amazing as they do on the computer! This is working better than I expected. So I tried an OpenOffice .odt file, since the OS is Linux. To be fair I also copied a .doc file to the phone. Neither of them would open on the Nokia though. So I tried a plain text file and it worked fine. Now my recipe for my mom's pancakes is on my phone. ;-) Love them with maple syrup and a little butter!
AUDIO
Ok, those aspects were solved. A major one was left to be tackled: audio. I moved a ringtone to my Media card and accessed it on my computer USB connection to the phone. I tried converting it to .ogg, which really compresses the file, but the phone couldn't recognize the format. So this required some research. I found that .aac (the Nokia favored audio format) is a version of MP4, which itself is a version of MPEG. Be careful! Even now I accidentally type .acc rather than .aac .Codecs
The open source codecs that allow decoding/encoding of .aac are FAAC and FAAD2. So here are the programs for Linux I found easily by a search within the YAST Software Installation interface that provide access to them. Floola (iPod interface, which allows converting for iPod formats, including .aac), jRipper, ogmrip, audiokonverter, encode2mpeg, MoreAmp, pacpl and shrip. I will try these in a moment. I just installed them. :-)
Audio Conversion Programs
Ok, so I learned from the settings in a program that FAAC is the encoder and FAAD2 is the decoder. MoreAmp was screwed up in the font size, so words were overlapping and impossible to read. I haven't seen this problem in a Linux program in many years! How shocking to see it now! Also, there is no clear way to transcode a file. So I moved on to jRipper. It was more hopeful. It appears to have the capability to convert mp3, aac and others. You can work on files on your drive, not just from removeable media (DVD and CD). However, when I selected the directory from the Nokia's media card, which has the .aac ringtone, the jRipper only showed me the two mp3's I placed in the folder. It couldn't find the .aac file. Szkoda!
Next program...ogmrip seems to only handle video files. I tried and tried to no avail. :-P Next! ... Floola requires an actual iPod. HA!!! If I owned Linux, do you think I'd also own an iPod!!!??? Next! ... audiokonverter should do the job. This might require the command line, but I'll search for an entry in the SuSE menu first. Well, I couldn't find it and it doesn't run from the commandline. So either I am misspelling it by capitalization or it didn't get installed. I am firing up YAST to see. Meanwhile, from the terminal window I tried the final three programs (encode2mpeg, pacpl and shrip) and discovered they are all commandline programs. Hmm...well, I could write a quick script to do what I need and then just run that script in the directory that I temporarily store the .aac/.mp3 files in to convert without having to worry about attributes to the commands. If you're lost just treat me as if I have lapsed into a brief mood of schizophrenia. Now I'll continue with normal talk again. ;-)
Audiokonverter
Well, I tried audionkonverter. It actually installed itself so that you can right-click on your file and choose the action menu and convert to, then the new file type you want (i.e. mp3, ogg, etc...). That was cool! It isn't just a commandline program after all. However, it did not convert my .aac file to .mp3 successfully. None of the other file format succeeded either. So I give up on that program. NEXT!!! Pacpl looks interesting. There is also another package that integrates it into Konqueror, but I'm not yet sure how. We'll soon see!
Pacpl
This is a perl program that accesses the necessary libraries to convert audio formats. Perl is rather fast, so I'm not afraid of lag. I'm more afraid of dependency hell, since any perl program may require other perl packages, yet not let YAST know at the time YAST is installing the perl program. Then you have to try the Perl repository and a special interface for it. YUCK!!!
VIDEO
3gp Converter looks the most promising. It is a Komander script, so that must first be installed. Then download the appropriate RPM of 3gp Converter. Under SuSE it is safest to right-click and install an RPM with KPackage. Believe me! When you first install an RPM you should mark the Replace Files and Test boxes. Once you have a Result=0 then it means nothing went wrong. Then unmark Test and clock Install again. :-) I have Komander, but this 3gp does not know it. So I gave up on it.
I found the perfect program for video transcoding for PC<->Nokia on Linux. It's called Mobile Media Converter. This makes the transcoding a piece of cake with drag and drop list building, preset conversions by button (for novices) and tweaking of parameters for the slightly more advanced user. In short, IT JUST WORKS! :-)
PDF, WORD, EXCEL, OPEN OFFICE, etc...->So now I want to read pdf's, doc's, xls', odt's, etc... What do I do? I found some programs made by Zesium Mobile. There is Mobile PDF, DocViewer, and MobiWord. Ok, these little programs do not substitute for OpenOffice nor for MS Word/Excel, but they will get you by in a pinch!
Mobile PDF shows PDF's, but without graphics. DocViewer shows excel spreadsheets, but the lines wrap a lot and the original may be difficult to dicipher. You'll just have to try it yourself. MobiWord allows you to create .rtf files in a knockoff of a very old Word '95 interface. At least they work, though they do not accomplish everything I want with my phone yet.
